It is a meager turnout for a rather unambitious cup, with the large stadium largely out-sizing its attendance. Nevertheless, it is the first of the young league's history. The referee whistles for the challengers to enter the stadium from their respective tunnels. Scattered applause and cheers erupt.

Ramona's legs buckled. She was comfortable around small crowds, but in a scene like this; as she waited for the whistle to be blown, she wondered why she ever agreed to this. Could she just be Pokemon Champion behind a curtain? Did she have to start doing tournaments now? Regardless, it was too late to back out. The referee pressed his device to his mouth, and out she went. Did this audience even know who she was? She didn't even have her father out there to comfort her, a familiar set of eyes in a see of judging strangers...

Mickey fiddled with his hands in fear. He looked up towards the ceiling of the tunnel and sighed. This tournament, even though it was small, was a lot for a kid like him. He wanted to make a name for himself, and so did his team, but... How will he do that? How would he earn the respect of the people with a pokemon like Magikarp? Could he hide it somehow? Maybe he can win with just his other two pokemon? Mickey shook his head, then rolled his shoulders. His thoughts hissed at him that it's too late to back out now. The whistle sounded, and Mickey stepped onto the arena. 'I'll try my best here. I won't run...' he tried to convince himself.

When Ramona's eyes met Mickey's, she immediately went at ease. She knew him vaguely, but it felt like an eternity's friendship then and there. She raised a hand with a silent wave, but didn't know what to say. Would he even be able to hear her? Before she could decide, the referee looked at his watch and blew his whistle to start. The crowd hooted, the big screen illuminated. 1-20OyepZ|JU

The referee ordered Ramona to send out her Pokemon first. "Go, Jello!" she called out. She had two new Pokemon, but figured it was right for her starter to see the first action in her first ever battle. The little cell Pokemon jumped out of the ball and bobbed a little bit in the air. It looked just awoken from a nap. Some of the crowd looked perplexed by the Pokemon; perhaps it was rarer here than in the Unova region.

Mickey blinked in shock as he saw the familiar face. That girl back in the tower was here! Could others from there be here as well? He smiled a bit and returned the wave. Inside, he was pretty scared. Hundreds of piercing gazes with high expectations from him, it was nerve-racking to say the least. He shook those thoughts away. 'Don't pay attention to them... This is just me and my opponent,' he told himself.
Suddenly, the referee called for him to send out his pokemon. His trembling hand went towards the three pokeballs. "Uh, umm..." he grabbed one of the pokeballs and threw it out, "Kani!"
The Corphish looked around with a puzzled expression, letting out a "cooorp?" as it eyed at the crowd and the stadium. Mickey wasn't concerned, the pokemon acted completely lost anywhere.

Ramona thought through all of Jello's moves. She could go all-out offensive, or alternatively... she pointed towards the opponent Pokemon. It was rather cute with its chomping pincers, but a battle was a battle.
"Confuse Ray!" she called. An orb zipped from Jello, zigzagging through the open air towards the Corphish.

The ray hit the Corphish immediately, confusing it to its surroundings. Ramona grinned. She hoped it would work in the three turns it lasted. The Corphish backed up as neon colors began to dance in her eyes. She began to bobble and stumble in an attempt to bring herself to her senses.

Everything was going as planned! Ramona smiled deviously to herself and flung her finger towards the opponent. "Psywave, quick! While it's confused!" She knew it to be a weaker move for little Pokemon like Jello, but Jello had a lot of power in its special attacks. It had levitated her while dreaming once, after all; it was the last time she slept with the little guy outside of the Pokeball.
Jello charged its power, then released it in a purple wave that rushed for the Corphish.

The attack hit, surrounding the Pokemon in a purplish haze of pure psychic power. Jello had a sociopathic look on its face as it dealt the attack.
