It is a meager turnout for a rather unambitious cup, with the large stadium largely out-sizing its attendance. Nevertheless, it is the first of the young league's history. The referee whistles for the challengers to enter the stadium from their respective tunnels. Scattered applause and cheers erupt.

He had waited decades for this. He thought this would never happen. Ernest didn't know what it would be like to compete in his first tournament, what kind of untetherable excitement would be coursing through his veins. He waited inside that tunnel, and for some strange reason, all he felt was tranquility. Perhaps the hype of the moment would never live up to his expectations. And he was okay with that; this required a clear mind.
The whistle trilled. Ernest stepped out.

Lydia leaned against the wall of the tunnel. She'd be lying if she said she wasn't nervous, but saying she wasn't extremely excited would also be a lie. She thought to herself for a while. What exactly would happen after she stepped onto the field? The scenarios quickly played out in her head. Lose and drown in humiliation? Lose honorably and still leave with dignity? Just barely win? Achieve a sweet victory? It all went through her head within seconds. Suddenly, the whistle blow snapped her out of her thoughts. She took a deep breath as she started walking, her hand gently running over the pokeballs on her belt. It was time. A first impression to the people here, and the first official tournament she'd participate in. "Kora..." she quietly spoke, "...Let's go introduce ourselves.
The cheers of the crowd seemed to pierce into her very soul and rile it up, since just hearing it made her excitement grow exponentially. It wasn't anything like the cheers in the Galarian gym challenges they'd show on TV, but it was enough to erase the nervousness. She was ready. Her Trapinch was ready. Lydia took one last deep breath before she stared over towards her opponent. They'd never be more ready.

Ernest sent out his Rockruff. It appeared in a flash of bright white light, like a camera after capture. It flexed its joints and gave a determined bark.

Lydia grabbed the first pokeball on her belt and threw it out like a baseball pitcher. The ball flew open as red light emitted from within. Not a moment later, her Trapinch emerged from the red light and trilled. He seemed just as excited as Lydia. He stared towards the Rockruff with a look of pure intent in his eyes.

The Trapinch hopped up and down while snapping its jaws at the air. Lydia looked towards her partner and said, "Kora, start it off with Mud Slap". The Trapinch dug its arms into the ground beneath it, scooped up some wet dirt in its jaws, then flung it towards the Rockruff.

Marley (Rockruff)'s Evasion Class is 3, so the move hits (19 > 3 durr)6 damage. Ernest's face fell as Marley was blasted back by a hard slap of mud. Somewhere above him, someone called him a fool for sending out a rock type against a ground type. Of course, what was he thinking? Ernest tried to withdraw his Pokemon, but a negative energy glowed from it. Trapinch's Arena Trap. The Pokeball wouldn't work. Dammit! Ernest thought. He could have Sucker Punched to start the battle. "Marley, use Sand Attack!" he called. The little dog Pokemon turned, and kicked up sand from the battle ground with its hind paws, as if it were burying a bone. Sucker Punch has higher priority than any of the Trapinch's moves, so I will go first in the turn."Marley, don't hesitate! Sucker Punch!" Ernest called. He had to take priority in this battle, especially as the last attack missed. The Rockruff turned back to face the Trapinch, and lunged, its paw curled as if into a fist. Lydia breathed a sigh of relief as the pokeball failed. Trapinch wasn't phased by the Sand Attack. It barely even moved from the sand hitting his face, since it was practically used to it. It then managed to dodge the Sucker Punch, but just barely. Seeing as the Rockruff was now in close proximity, Lydia shouted "Quick, use Bite!". A moment later, the Trapinch threw its huge head towards the Rockruff and snapped its jaws

(Sucker Punch so I go first.)
(Also the flinch isn't applied cus I went first last turn, and flinches don't carry to the next turn.)
(12 > 3, so the move hit.)
This was a nightmare so far. His Rockruff was struggling, taking a bite on the paw from Trapinch as it tried to recoil away. It limped and licked the effected spot.
"I believe in you, Marley! Use Sucker Punch again!" he called. He wasn't sure how well his Rockruff would last, but he needed to get as much damage on this Trapinch as he could.

16 (accuracy) > 4 (Trapinch's DEF evasion class), so the attack hits. The Sucker Punch got through, hitting the Trapinch square in the nose with the brunt of Marley's paw. The Rockruff hopped back, rather proud of itself. Its first ever landed attack in its first ever battle! But was it enough to make a difference? DAMAGE ROLL:1d8 + 1 ATK/Sp. Trapinch's HP: 14/24
Trapinch shouted in shock at the blunt force that hit him directly. He stumbled backwards and nearly fell onto his side. "Kora! Go for another Bite!" Lydia worriedly said. A hit like that was alarming to say the least. The Trapinch lunged forwards and tried to land another bite.

NOTICE TO ANYONE USING THIS BATTLE IS SOME KIND OF REFERENCE POINT
This is a learning process. We're all pretty new to the system. We've been using dice rolls wrong up until now, but have decided to keep on going. Past this point it should be okay. That time, as Marley was attacked, she stayed down. Ernest could tell she was too hurt and exhausted to battle. "Return!" he called, sucking the Pokemon back into its capsule. It wasn't the start he was hoping for, but he had two more Pokemon. "Go, Piper!" he called. A Natu appeared on the field, drawing meager excitement from the crowd. Natu itself didn't look as excited as it did content; it groomed itself and blinked at the opposition. SPEED ROLL:owfiuCQt1-20+ 1 = 8

Trapinch backed up as a Natu emerged from the pokeball. It lifted it's huge head in pride from defeating that Rockruff. It now stared towards the Natu. Lydia blinked, 'Ground moves won't work... I can't lower its accuracy...' she thought.

It wouldn't have mattered anyway what the priority was. Ernest was determined to use his most common move, Sucker Punch, to his utmost advantage, and take out the Trapinch before it could get too many hits on his little bird. He just hoped his little bird would listen to him.
"Sucker Punch, Piper!" he called. The little Natu, having no hands to punch with, instead opted to headbutt, and a sinister energy came off of it as it charged at the Trapinch with a considerable pace.

The attack landed perfectly, almost critical if not for the slight pivot the Trapinch made. A sucker punch to the face. Was it enough to do decisive damage?
